The right care makes the difference
In the following guide you will find information on how to care for your Handmade Coils and your Premium Merch.
To ensure you enjoy your handmade coils for a long time, it's important to keep a few things in mind. If you follow our guidelines, you can not only increase the lifespan of your coils but also ensure that the flavor lasts longer.
Gentle and regular care
Due to constant heating and cooling, it's perfectly normal for deposits to form on your coils. These aren't serious at first, but should be removed regularly for several reasons:
- Due to deposits, the taste will soon suffer because the liquid will no longer be vaporized properly
- Crusts reduce the flow and can start to burn. The whole thing could then reach levels of harm similar to smoking tobacco cigarettes, and we don't want that.
- The deposits can permanently damage the surface of the wires and significantly shorten the lifespan of your coils
When and how should I clean my handmade coils?
As with a car, it makes sense to maintain a service interval, but coil care and cotton replacement depend on various factors.
For example, which liquid is used, sweet, less sweet, with or without sucralose, or other additives such as menthol, koolada, etc.
You don't have to clean your setup daily or every time you refill the tank, but you should still take a few minutes regularly for "maintenance work." This can sometimes be very relaxing; you'll gain more routine and eventually wind your atomizers practically blindfolded. This will also ensure a consistently good flavor level and get the most out of your setup.
It's easy to tell if your coil needs cleaning: If the taste or vapor quantity decreases, you get a slightly burnt taste and an unusual scratchy feeling in your throat, or the flow is no longer right, you should definitely inspect your installed coils.
If you can see very dark cotton wool or a dark, almost black layer on the wire surface, you should proceed as follows:
- Remove the cotton carefully so as not to distort the coil
- Set your battery pack to about half the power you normally use to operate the coil (you can find the power for annealing each product in the description here in the shop)
- Now pulse again and again for 1-2 seconds until the remaining liquid evaporates and the coil gradually takes on color (to protect the material, the wire should never glow brighter than cherry red or dark orange).
- Here, light deposits will already turn into ash, more stubborn ones still need some heat
- Blow the residues off the surface and check again for residues
Some deposits are so stubborn that it seems almost impossible to remove them without damaging the coil. In this case, I recommend heating the coil, releasing the fire button, and quenching the open atomizer upside down in water (only hold the atomizer in the water up to the coil; never submerge the battery!). This also works well with a sink jet of water.
The sudden temperature change usually completely dissolves any remaining crusts. You can repeat this process several times.
At this point, I'd like to point out that opinions on this technique are divided. Some argue that "quenching" the coils weakens the material. I've been using this method for almost every coil since 2018 and haven't noticed any disadvantages so far, neither in taste, nor in durability, nor in performance.
Other sources even recommend cleaning the coils with mini wire brushes, which I strongly advise against! The thin ends of the bristles can get caught between the sheathed wires and cause irreparable damage.
If you follow these simple instructions, you will enjoy your setup for a long time.

The right care for your merch
Just like with your handmade coils, there are a few things to keep in mind when properly caring for your merchandise!
Since sustainability is also a question of longevity, we would like to show you how you can properly care for your clothes, changing mat, etc. and enjoy them for a long time.
Shirts & Hoodies
I certainly don't need to explain how to use a washing machine here, but how you wash and care for your clothes properly can definitely make a difference.
Our premium merchandise is made from ring-spun organic cotton and is pre-washed, so shrinkage after the first wash isn't an issue.
The print is made of high-quality transfer textile film and is fused to the fabric using heat transfer. Due to its elasticity, the print is stretchable and won't peel off the fibers when stretched, making it more comfortable to wear than screen-printed prints.
The material is very robust, but you should still pay attention to the following:
- Turn inside out when washing to protect the print
- Do not iron over the print! If you still want to iron, the easiest way is to turn the shirt or hoodie inside out.
- a washing temperature of max 40°C
- Do not bleach, as this will make the print porous
- Follow the care instructions on the sewn-in label
Changing mat
Nothing decorates your desk or changing area quite as beautifully as a premium changing mat from Aenigma. It protects your desk surface from scratches, spilled atomizers, or the unwanted smell of your favorite e-liquid, which can soak into the furniture surface if you don't wipe it away quickly enough.
Your changing mat will inevitably get a few stains sooner or later and will need some regular care.
However, you should avoid using the washing machine! While our supplier has assured us that the mat won't be damaged (without spin cycle and at a maximum of 40°C), washing can still loosen the rubber coating or cause the mat to deform unsightly. Therefore, we recommend gentle hand washing:
- Place the mat flat in your bath or shower tray and moisten it with lukewarm water
- a clean and damp microfiber cloth, as well as a mild textile cleaner (a little dishwashing liquid will also suffice)
- Gently massage the cleaner into the mat with the cloth (do not rub too hard) and let it work for a few minutes
- then simply rinse with clean water and let the mat drain well and dry
Another tip: try laying the mat flat over a clothes rack or placing a sufficiently large towel flat on the floor so the mat can rest flat against it with the print facing up. This way, the mat will lie flat while drying and won't develop wavy edges (which will disappear after a while but still look unsightly).
Snap Back
You can't always keep a cool head, which is why your cap will eventually start to smell. For hygiene reasons, you should also clean it regularly.
However, using the washing machine isn't the best idea. This will cause your cap to quickly lose its shape!
If you still prefer a wash cycle, there are washing frames for caps that you can clamp your cap into to help it retain its shape. Be sure to follow the manufacturer's instructions!
Otherwise, as with the changing mats, we recommend gentle hand washing:
- Moisten the cap and treat it with a detergent for colored laundry.
- For a more thorough cleaning, you can also dissolve the detergent in lukewarm water in the sink and soak your cap in it for 20-30 minutes
- Remove dirt inside and out with a soft laundry or hand brush
- Rinse thoroughly with clean water
Another tip: since hand washing isn't always as effective as a wash cycle, you can also use a hygienic clothing rinse (no bleach!). This will combat odors and make your cap hygienically fresh again.
